Play Euchre Online — Order Up, Trust Your Bowers
Euchre is a four-player partnership trick-taking game played with just 24 cards. You and the player across the table team up against the other two. Each hand, one team names trump and promises to win at least three of the five tricks. Make it and you score; fail and you've been euchred. First team to 10 points wins. Free in your browser, no sign-up.
How Do You Play Euchre?
Goal: win the bid when your hand is strong, take at least three tricks, and reach 10 points first.
Setup
- Deck: 24 cards — only the 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of each suit.
- Teams: you (South) partner with North; West and East oppose you.
- Deal: 5 cards each. The top card of the leftover pile is turned face up.
Bidding
- Starting left of the dealer, each player may order up the turned card's suit as trump or pass. If someone orders it up, the dealer adds the turned card to their hand and discards one.
- If all four pass, the card is turned down and each player may name any other suit as trump — or pass again. The dealer must choose in this second round ("stick the dealer").
- The player who names trump is the maker. A confident maker can go alone: their partner sits out and a perfect hand scores four.
The Bowers
The Jack of trump is the right bower, the strongest card in the game. The Jack of the same color is the left bower — the second-strongest trump, and it counts as a trump card, not as its printed suit. With hearts as trump, the order runs J♥, J♦, A♥, K♥, Q♥, 10♥, 9♥.
Scoring
- Makers take 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point.
- Makers take all 5 (a march): 2 points — or 4 alone.
- Makers take fewer than 3 (euchred): 2 points to the defenders.
Strategy
- Count trump before you order up. Three trumps including a bower is usually enough; two small trumps is not.
- Remember the left bower. The same-color Jack strengthens your trump count and weakens the suit it left. Many lost hands come from forgetting it.
- Lead trump as the maker. Pulling two trumps from each opponent protects your aces for the last tricks.
- Don't order into the dealer's hand. Ordering up hands the dealer a free trump. As the defenders, you need a hand that beats that gift.
- Go alone on near-perfect hands only. Both bowers plus the ace of trump is the classic alone hand — the double reward beats the small risk.
About This Version
Three AI difficulty levels (easy, medium, hard) from the menu. The hard AI weighs its seat at the table before ordering up, creates voids with the dealer's discard, and goes alone on strong hands. Stick-the-dealer is always on, so every hand gets played. Install it as an app from your browser menu to play offline.
A Short History
Euchre reached America in the 1840s with German settlers, most likely from the Alsatian game Juckerspiel, and spread along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. For decades it was the most-played social card game in the United States, and it introduced the Joker — invented around 1860 as the "best bower," a card above both Jacks. Today it remains a fixture of the American Midwest, Ontario, and pubs across Australia and New Zealand.
