Canasta is a melding card game played here as a two-player game with two full decks. You collect cards of the same rank into melds and aim to build a canasta — a meld of seven cards — before your opponent does. How Do You Play Canasta?
Goal: meld cards of matching rank, complete at least two canastas, and go out before your opponent to bank the round.
Setup
- Deck: two standard 52-card decks shuffled together, 104 cards in all.
- Wild cards: the four deuces are wild and can stand in for any rank in a meld.
- Turn: draw two cards from the stock, meld if you can, then discard one.
Melds and Canastas
- A meld is three or more cards of the same rank. It needs at least two natural cards and no more than three wild ones.
- A canasta is a meld of seven cards. A natural canasta (no wilds) scores 500; a mixed one scores 300.
- Your first meld of the round must total a minimum, and that minimum rises as your score grows.

A red 3 is set aside for a 100-point bonus and replaced from the stock. Going out earns another 100 — but only once you hold two complete canastas.
Strategy
- Aim for a natural canasta. Seven cards with no wilds scores 500 against 300 for a mixed one, so save your deuces for melds you cannot fill otherwise.
- Do not go out too soon. You need two canastas before you can end the round; leaving early with one strands your points.
- Mind the frozen pile. Once a wild card is discarded the pile is frozen, and you need two matching natural cards in hand to take it.
- Hold black threes to block. Discarding a black 3 stops your opponent taking the pile for one turn — a cheap way to break their run.
- Bank red threes at once. They score whether you win or lose the round, so there is no reason to sit on them.

A Short History
Canasta was invented around 1939 in Montevideo, Uruguay, by attorney Segundo Santos and his partner Alberto Serrato. The name means "basket" in Spanish. It swept the United States in the early 1950s and for a few years rivalled Contract Bridge as the most-played card game in American homes.
