Mahjong Tile Graphics

Default / Classic Set — DemChing (CC BY-SA 4.0)

The 167-tile Mahjong artwork used in the default board themes (Hong Kong, Canton, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Europe, US variants) is DemChing's Mahjong asset pack, purchased from demching.itch.io/mahjong. DemChing's pack is itself a derivative of the original SVG mahjong tile set by Cangjie6, published on Wikimedia Commons.

Both works are distributed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0).

We apply a small run-time CSS brightness filter (the --tile-dim custom property in css/mahjong.css) when the user selects a dark theme, to reduce glare against dark chrome. This is a transient render-time transform rather than a stored derivative; any stored derivative we ship in the future will be marked CC BY-SA 4.0 alongside the original set. Full license text and the attribution chain are bundled at /assets/mahjong/LICENSE.txt.

Cultural Tile Sets — Royal Graphics Resources

Five themed tile sets — China, India, Japan, Korea, Medieval Europe — are from the "Mahjong Premium Masterpack" by Royal Graphics Resources, purchased from royalgraphicsresources.itch.io/mahjong-premium-masterpack. Each set ships both a normal and a pre-rendered selected-state variant for every tile, plus shared back/blank/shadow pieces.

The pack is distributed under Royal Graphics Resources' custom commercial-use license, which permits use and modification in commercial products and explicitly forbids reselling or redistributing the pack or its parts separately, using the assets to train AI, or using them in crypto/NFT projects. None of those forbidden uses apply here. Attribution is not required by the license but is voluntarily given here.

To stay cleanly on the "use in product" side of the no-redistribution clause, the raw per-tile files are composed into a single sprite atlas per set at build time; only the atlases are served to browsers, so users never receive the pack in its original per-file form.

Mahjong Layouts

We ship ~850 layouts for Mahjong Solitaire, aggregated from open-source projects and long-running community archives. Every layout's author is shown on its card in the layout picker. We deliberately exclude the Kyodai Mahjongg publisher's own material (CynaGames' cyna.net distribution and the kyodaimahjongg.weebly.com fan site) to respect the Kyodai trademark and copyright, even though those files use the same .lay format as the community packs below. Sources and licensing status:

Are you one of the layout authors listed below?

Thank you for the work — your layouts are making people's days a little lighter. If you'd like the attribution changed, your contact details added, or a specific layout removed, just email (or use the Report link on any layout's card in the picker). We'll act on requests quickly — usually same-day.

Verified open-source

Community archives (per-pack licensing pending)

The bulk of the catalog comes from long-standing Kyodai-format community packs that were freely shared on personal sites and aggregator portals from the early 2000s onward. Most have no explicit license statement beyond "freeware". We include them under a good-faith assumption of redistribution and are working through per-author attribution. If you are the author or rights-holder of any layout and would like attribution changed or a layout removed, please open an issue on our GitHub repository.

Layout files were located via the mahseum aggregator (MIT, © 2024 ffalt). The GPL-licensed subset ships with its license texts bundled at /mahjong-layouts/LICENSES/.

Layout Creators

Named authors whose work appears in our catalog, with the number of their layouts we ship and the archive(s) they appeared in. If you are one of these creators or recognise someone who should be contacted about a missing / incorrect credit, please let us know at .

Layouts are plain data files used by our app at runtime — they are not linked into the application binary. Including GPL-licensed data alongside non-GPL application code is mere aggregation (per the GNU GPL v2 FAQ on aggregation) as long as the licenses are distributed with the data; we do so here.
