Play Gypsy Solitaire Online - Two-Deck Patience

Gypsy uses two decks and eight tableau piles. It borrows the building rule from Klondike and the batch deal from Spider. You get eight foundations to fill and a long game to plan. Play it free in your browser.

How to Play Gypsy Solitaire

Goal: Move all 104 cards to eight foundations. Each one runs from Ace up to King in one suit.

Game Setup

The Rules

The Deal Is the Clock

You get ten deals and no more. Each one drops a fresh card on every pile. That can bury work you just finished. Use your moves before you tap the stock.

Winning Strategy Tips

Managing Empty Piles

An empty pile is worth more here than in most games. Use it to unpack a tangled column. Try to open one again before your next deal. A board with no space and a full stock is close to lost.

Two Decks, Two Copies

Each card appears twice. If one Ace is buried deep, look for the other one. Try not to bury both copies of a card you will need soon.

Gypsy Compared to Other Games

Against Klondike: Gypsy uses two decks, eight piles and a batch deal. Klondike turns cards one at a time and lets you cycle the stock. Gypsy is longer and asks for more planning.

Against Spider: Spider builds runs in one suit and clears them itself. Gypsy builds in other colours and sends single cards to foundations.

Against Forty Thieves: Forty Thieves moves one card at a time. Gypsy lets a whole run travel, so it gives you more room to work.

Difficulty and Win Rate

Gypsy is a hard game. Two decks, hidden cards and a fixed number of deals all work against you. Steady play wins a modest share of deals. Most losses come from dealing early or from a board with no spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move part of a run?

Yes. Any part that runs down in other colours can move as one group.

Do empty piles have to be filled before a deal?

No. That rule belongs to Spider. In Gypsy the deal drops a card on every pile, empty or not.

How many times can I deal?

Ten times. The stock holds 80 cards and each deal uses eight. After that there is no redeal.

Can I take a card back off a foundation?

No. A foundation move is final in Gypsy, so send a low card up only when you are sure.

Is every deal winnable?

No. Some deals lock up. Once the stock is spent there is no redeal, so a deal can run out. The game ends the deal as soon as no run of moves can bank another card. That can happen while cards are still legal to shuffle, so you are told at once instead of moving a card between two piles to find out. Undo to try another line.

What fills an empty pile?

Any card or any legal run. You do not need a King.

About the Name

This two-deck game has been printed in patience books since the early twentieth century. Its old name is now widely seen as a slur, and many collections have retired it. We keep the name here only so players can find the game they are looking for.
