Play Memory Match — Find Every Pair

Memory, also called Concentration, is a single-player matching game. Cards lie face-down in a grid; you flip two at a time. A pair stays face-up, a mismatch flips back. The round ends when every pair is found. Free in your browser, no sign-up, works offline once the page has loaded.

How Do You Play Memory?

Goal: reveal every pair in as few moves as possible.

A perfect round needs one move per pair — every second flip would have to match from memory. Real rounds run longer because the first flips reveal cards you can't yet pair.

About This Version

Three grid sizes from the menu and four emoji decks (animals, flowers, food, travel), one picked at random per round. Install it as an app from your browser menu to play offline. Your best move count per grid is saved on this device.

A Short History

The face-down matching mechanic appears in 19th-century parlour card games. The modern boxed version was published by Ravensburger as memory in Germany in 1959 and has been in print ever since. In American English the same game is more often called Concentration.

Frequently asked questions

How is Memory scored?

Each pair of flips counts as one move; lower is better. The game also awards 10 points per matched pair and an end-of-round efficiency bonus tied to how close you got to the minimum. On the 4×4 grid that minimum is 8 moves, meaning every second flip matched from memory.

What's the smallest possible move count?

It equals the number of pairs in the grid: six moves on the 3×4 grid, eight on the 4×4, ten on the 4×5. Most players take more — a clean round is usually around 1.5× the minimum once you've practised a grid size a few times.

Is there a time limit?

No. Memory rewards recall, not speed. The move counter is the score; the on-screen timer is there only for your own pacing. The end-of-round summary does give a small extra bonus if you finished under a minute, but slow rounds count as wins all the same.

What are the emoji themes?

Each round picks one of four decks at random: animals, flowers, food, or travel. The deck stays the same for the whole grid, so you only have to remember positions — not switch between different image styles mid-round. Emojis read clearly at small sizes, which matters on a phone.

Is Memory the same game as Concentration?

Yes. memory is the brand name Ravensburger has used in Germany since 1959, and Concentration is the older name used in American English. Some regional rule variants add wildcards or scoring twists, but the core flip-two, match-or-flip-back mechanic is the same.
