Ukrainian Solitaire is Yukon with the rule that strands most Yukon deals removed: an empty column accepts ANY card, not only a king. Everything else is unchanged — the seven-column staircase, the alternating-colour building, and the family's freedom to move any face-up card with every card on top of it. That single change turns an empty column from a lucky break into a workspace you can plan around, and it lifts the game from one of the harder patiences into one you can expect to win regularly.
Open a column early and treat it as a workbench. An empty column is worth more here than anywhere else in the family, because anything at all can go into it. The classic manoeuvre is three moves long: park an awkward card in the space, dig out the hidden card that was under it, then rebuild onto the board and hand the space back.
Do not fill the space casually. This is the trap. Once a column holds a low card with a tail growing on it, you have traded your best asset for a small tidy-up, and you are playing Yukon again. Keep it empty until you can name the card you are freeing.
Chase face-down cards before foundations. With no stock, every hidden card is information the rest of the game depends on. A move that turns one over beats a move that banks a mid-rank card almost every time.
Watch what your tails drag along. Because a card carries everything above it regardless of order, a convenient move can bury a low card you will want ten moves later. Look at the bottom of the tail you are lifting, not just the card you clicked.
Yukon's one idea — any face-up card moves with everything on top of it — removes the concept of a blocked card and turns patience into a sequencing problem. Its variants then adjust two dials: what the tableau builds on, and what an empty column accepts. Russian Solitaire tightens the build to same-suit and is famously hard. Moosehide bans a card's own suit. Alaska allows building up as well as down. Ukrainian leaves the build alone and opens the second dial all the way, which makes it the family's most forgiving member and the best place to learn how Yukon-style tail moves actually work before facing the stricter relatives.
