Thumb and Pouch is the game to reach for when Klondike has stopped being a puzzle and started being a coin toss. It deals exactly the same staircase — seven columns, only the tip of each showing — and then relaxes the two rules that strand most Klondike deals. A card may be built on any suit except its own, so three suits will take it instead of two. And an empty column accepts any card, not just a king. Add two redeals and you have one of the most winnable one-deck games there is.
Break up same-suit runs before they set. This is the trap the loose rule hides. A descending run of one suit cannot be restacked anywhere, because every card in it refuses its own suit. Spot those columns early and take them apart while you still have places to put the pieces.
Chase the hidden cards, as in Klondike. Twenty-one unknowns is the same burden the parent sets, and the extra host per card is exactly what lets you get at them. Prefer any move that turns a card over to any move that merely tidies.
Empty a column and keep it empty. Because any card fills a space, a column you clear is a genuine workbench: park an awkward card, dig out what was under it, then rebuild. Filling it casually with a low card trades your best asset for very little.
Spend the first redeal while it can still rearrange something. Players hoard redeals and then use one on a board with six cards left in the waste, where it changes almost nothing. A redeal is worth most while there are still enough cards to reorder.
The Klondike family turns a handful of the same dials: how much of the staircase is hidden, what the tableau builds on, what an empty column accepts, how many cards a stock click turns, and how many times the stock returns. Thumb and Pouch leaves the deal alone — this is Klondike's board, unaltered — and turns three of the others the friendly way at once. That makes it the family's gentlest full-difficulty member, and the usual recommendation for a player who likes Klondike but is tired of losing to the deal rather than to the game. Whitehead takes a different route to the same relief by showing you everything; Westcliff takes a third by making the columns shallow.
