Shamrocks gives with one hand and takes with the other. Its building rule is the most generous in patience: a card may go up OR down on any suit at all, so the 8 of clubs accepts any 7 and any 9. Then comes the catch that makes the game — no fan may ever hold more than three cards. At the deal every fan but one is already full, so the whole board opens through a single card, and every move you make is what unlocks the next.
The eighteenth fan is the whole opening. Seventeen fans start at the three-card cap and can accept nothing. The lone card is the only place anything can go, so your first move is almost always dictated — and your second move depends entirely on which card you chose to put there. Look at both before you commit.
Make room, do not make stacks. The cap turns the usual instinct inside out. In most solitaires building a long chain is progress; here every card you add to a fan brings it closer to being frozen. Prefer the move that takes a card OFF a fan — to a foundation above all — over the move that puts one on.
Dig for aces before anything else. A foundation is the only place a card can go that does not consume fan space, so an open suit is worth more here than in any other fan game. Until an ace is up, every move you make is shuffling the same fifty-two cards between eighteen small boxes.
Count your escape routes before a one-way move. With no redeal there is no rescue: a board with no legal move is finished. Before you fill the last gap in a fan, check what will still be able to move afterwards.
The fan family — La Belle Lucie and its relatives — is defined by what it withholds: no stock, no reserve, no free cell, no run move, one card per fan, and an emptied fan gone for good. Its members then argue about two things: what the tableau builds on, and what rescues you get. La Belle Lucie builds strictly by suit and hands you two reshuffles. Trefoil keeps that build and starts the aces for you. Super Flower Garden drops the suit requirement. Shamrocks is the outlier at both ends — the loosest build in the family and the only member with no redeal at all — which is why it plays less like its siblings and more like a sliding puzzle.
