Play Agnes Solitaire Online - The Bernauer Version

Agnes Bernauer is an open Klondike relative with a reserve row. Every tableau card is face up. The foundations do not start at the Ace. One card fixes the starting rank, and the rest follow it. Play it free in your browser.

How to Play Agnes Solitaire

Goal: Move all 52 cards to four foundations. Each one holds 13 cards of one suit.

Game Setup

The Rules

How the Base Rank Works

Say the base card is a 7. Every foundation then runs 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The three other foundations start when their own 7 appears. A foundation is full at 13 cards.

How the Stock Works

The stock holds 16 cards. The first deal gives one card to each of the seven reserve piles. So does the second. The last deal has only two cards left, so it covers the first two piles. There is no redeal.

Winning Strategy Tips

Timing an Empty Pile

An empty column is useful, but you cannot fill it from the tableau. Check that a helpful reserve card is on top first. Otherwise the space may sit idle while your board tightens.

Agnes Bernauer and Agnes Sorel

Two patience games share the name Agnes, and collections do not always agree on the details. The clear difference is the reserve. Agnes Sorel has none: its stock feeds the tableau directly. Agnes Bernauer adds the seven-pile reserve row and the stock deals that fill it. This page and this game are Bernauer.

Difficulty and Win Rate

Agnes Bernauer is a hard game. You can see the whole tableau, which helps. But the same-colour rule and the reserve-only spaces are tight limits. Many deals cannot be solved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the tableau piles build in other colours?

No. This game builds down in the same colour. Red goes on red and black goes on black.

What can fill an empty column?

Only a card from the reserve. A card from another tableau pile cannot move there.

How many reserve cards are there?

Seven piles. They start with one card each and grow as you deal from the stock.

Can I play a reserve card from under another one?

No. Only the top card of each reserve pile is in play.

Can I take a card back off a foundation?

No. Foundation moves are final in this game.

Is every deal winnable?

No. Some deals lock up. The stock deals three times and there is no redeal, so a deal can run out. The game ends the deal as soon as no run of moves can bank another card. That can happen while cards are still legal to shuffle, so you are told at once instead of moving a card between two piles to find out. Undo to try another line.
