Empty Pile Management

Empty tableau piles are incredibly valuable:

Suit Separation

Since building requires the same suit, try not to let two suits pile up in the same column. A column that alternates suits buries the cards under it, because only a same-suit neighbour can ever come off the top. Keeping each column to one or two suits prevents that tangle and makes the next move obvious.

Ace Liberation

Identify where each Ace is buried and work backward to free them. Getting all four Aces to foundations early opens up much more mobility.

Fortress vs. Beleaguered Castle

Fortress is closely related to Beleaguered Castle:

Why Play Our Fortress Solitaire?

History of Fortress Solitaire

Fortress Solitaire is a variation of the classic Beleaguered Castle, which dates back to the 18th century. The name evokes a military fortress under siege: the tableau is the wall of cards you must break down, and the foundations are the keep you build up. Older books deal the columns as two facing "wings"; this version lays the same ten columns out in a single row, which reads better on a screen and changes nothing about the play. Fortress became popular in the early 20th century as a more challenging alternative to Beleaguered Castle, requiring players to first free the Aces before building foundations.

Variations

Beleaguered Castle: Aces start in foundations - slightly easier than Fortress.

Streets and Alleys: Eight columns instead of ten, and the tableau builds down regardless of suit.

Citadel: Cards that fit a foundation are played there during the deal, so you start with a head start.

Difficulty & Win Rate

Fortress Solitaire is considered medium difficulty. The complete visibility of all cards makes strategic planning possible, but the same-suit building restriction and directional choices create genuine challenge. Win rates vary from about 20-30% for casual players to 50-60% for experienced players who master empty column play and directional planning. Many deals are winnable, but some are not: the same-suit restriction can lock a layout no matter how well you play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I build both up AND down on the same pile?

Yes! You can place 7 of Hearts on 8 of Hearts, then later place 6 of Hearts on that 7, changing direction. However, you can't wrap (Ace on King or vice versa).

Why is same-suit building so restrictive?

It forces careful planning! Unlike alternating-color games where you have many options, same-suit building means you must think carefully about suit separation and sequencing. It's what makes Fortress strategic rather than mechanical.

What do I do with Kings and Aces?

Send Aces to the foundations early. Kings are not blocked either: a Queen of the same suit goes on a King, and a King goes on a Queen of the same suit. Only the wrap between Ace and King is banned. You can also drop either card into an empty column.

Should I fill empty piles immediately?

Not always! Empty piles are valuable tactical resources. Don't fill them just because you can - fill them when it accomplishes a strategic goal like freeing an important card or separating tangled suits.

How is Fortress different from FreeCell?

Both have all cards visible, but Fortress builds up OR down by suit (very different from FreeCell's down by alternating colors). Fortress has no free cells - empty tableau piles serve that purpose. Fortress is generally considered harder than FreeCell.
