Rummy 500 is a two-player card game where your melds stay face up on the table and both players can add to them. You draw, build runs and sets, and score the cards you meld while losing points for cards left in your hand. The twist is the discard pile: you can reach deep into it. First player to 500 wins. Goal: meld high-value cards onto the table, lay off spares, and empty your hand before your points sink.
Instead of drawing from the stock, you may take a card from anywhere in the discard pile — but you also take every card sitting on top of it, and you must immediately meld the card you reached for. It is the signature move of Rummy 500 and the reason a fat discard pile is a tempting target.

You score the cards you have melded and lose the cards still in your hand, so your total can go up or down each round. The round ends when a player empties their hand or the stock runs out.

Rummy 500, also called 500 Rum, grew out of the basic Rummy family in the United States in the early twentieth century. Adding open table melds and scored lay-offs turned a simple discard game into one that rewards planning, and it became a common family card game across North America.
