Aunt Mary is Klondike squared off. Instead of a staircase that grows one card longer to the right, it deals six columns of six, and instead of hiding everything but the tip of each column it hides a different amount in each one: the first column is dealt entirely face up, the second hides its bottom card, the third its bottom two, and so on until the sixth column shows only its top card. Fifteen cards are hidden in all, three fewer than Klondike hides, but they are hidden in a shape that changes how you play. The left of the board is open information; the right is where the deal keeps its secrets.
Dig on the right, build on the left. The first column hides nothing, so nothing you do there reveals anything. The sixth column hides five cards under one. Every move that uncovers a card on the right side of the board is worth more than the same move on the left, and a plan that opens the right-hand columns early is a plan that gets to see the deal.
The stock is short. Sixteen cards, one pass, no redeal. In Klondike the stock is a second chance; here it is a small, fixed supply that you will see exactly once. Exhaust every tableau move before each click, and remember what has gone by — a card that passed the waste is gone for good.
Count kings before you empty a column. Only a king can fill a space, so a space with no king to put in it is a column you have thrown away. With six columns rather than seven there is less room for that mistake, and with the open first column you can often see whether a king is reachable before you commit.
Use the open column as a workbench. Because you can see all of column one, you can plan its whole sequence of moves in advance. It is the natural place to park cards while you work the hidden columns, and the natural place to build long alternating runs that can later move as a unit onto a king.
The Klondike family turns a handful of the same dials: how much of the deal is hidden, what the tableau builds on, what an empty column accepts, how many cards a stock click turns, and how many times the stock comes round. Aunt Mary leaves every rule at Klondike's setting and changes only the deal — six columns rather than seven, a square rather than a staircase, and hidden cards that depend on which column rather than on how deep. That single change moves the luck from the bottom of every column to the right-hand side of the board, and gives the player something Klondike never does: one column they can read completely from the first move.
