Spanish Patience II is the Baker's Dozen board played by the gentlest of its rules. Thirteen columns of four are dealt face up with no stock, and the kings stay wherever the shuffle put them. The tableau builds down by rank regardless of suit, one card at a time, and an empty column takes any card. It is the game many rule books call simply Spanish Patience; the name here follows the registered source, which keeps that plain name for a different game with alternating-colour foundations.
Thirteen tops is a lot of room — use it. With every column top a possible host and any 8 taking any 7, most cards have three or four homes at any moment. The danger is not being stuck but building carelessly: a run of mixed suits banks slowly, because the foundations still want suit order.
Watch the kings. Unlike Baker's Dozen, a king can be dealt on top of the cards beneath it, and a king can never be built on. A king sitting on an ace is the position that loses; move it into a space or onto nothing — it has to go somewhere, and the only somewhere is an empty column.
Open a column, then keep it. Four-card columns empty quickly. Any card may enter a space, but the best use of one is parking a king or a card you need to dig under; do not fill it with a card that has a host elsewhere.
Bank in suit order, build in any. The tableau does not care about suits; the foundations do. Before you cover a card, check whether its suit's foundation will want it soon.
The Baker's Dozen line deals thirteen columns of four and varies three things: whether the kings are sunk to the bottom, what an empty column accepts, and how the tableau builds. Baker's Dozen sinks the kings and closes the spaces; Portuguese Solitaire leaves the kings where they fall and opens the spaces to kings only; Spanish Patience II leaves the kings and opens the spaces to any card. It is the most forgiving of the three, and the one where a buried ace is a nuisance rather than a catastrophe.
