Play Smokey Solitaire Online — Whitehead's Build on Klondike's Deal

Smokey borrows one rule from Whitehead and keeps everything else from Klondike. The staircase is dealt as Klondike deals it, with only the top card of each column showing, the spaces take only kings, and the stock comes round twice more after the first pass. But the tableau builds down in the same colour — a red seven on a red eight — and only a sequence in one suit may be picked up and moved as a unit. Whitehead makes that build bearable by showing you everything. Smokey shows you what Klondike shows you, and gives you two redeals in compensation.

Strategy

Keep suits together, not just colours. A red seven on a red eight is legal whichever red it is, but a run of hearts on hearts can be moved as one piece and a run of hearts and diamonds cannot. When you have a choice of host, choose the one that keeps the suit — it is the difference between a run you can relocate later and a run you have to dismantle a card at a time.

Two hosts, and both hidden. Every card has exactly two possible landing places in the tableau, both its own colour, and with the staircase hidden you usually cannot see either. Uncover before you commit: a move that turns a card face up is worth more than a move that merely tidies, because it tells you where the next host is.

The redeals are your margin. Two passes back through the waste are what make the same-colour build playable on a hidden deal. Use the first pass to learn the stock's order, then plan the second and third around what you know is coming. Do not spend a redeal before every board move is exhausted.

Kings are scarcer than they look. A space takes only a king, and the king must be face up somewhere to be moved. With twenty-one cards hidden, the king you need is often one of them. Clear the shallow columns first — they reveal fastest — and go looking for kings before you open columns for them.

Where It Sits in the Klondike Family

The Klondike family turns a handful of the same dials: how much of the deal is hidden, what the tableau builds on, what an empty column accepts, how many cards a stock click turns, and how often the stock comes round. Whitehead turns three the friendly way and one the hard way. Smokey turns only the hard one — the same-colour build with its same-suit runs — and keeps Klondike's hidden deal and king rule, then compensates with two redeals where Whitehead allows none. It is the stricter of the two games by some distance, and the one to play when Whitehead has started to feel solved.
