Busy Aces strips the Forty Thieves family to its bones: twelve tableau columns of ONE card each, and the other ninety-two cards waiting in the stock. Most patiences hand you a board and ask you to unpick it. Busy Aces hands you almost nothing and asks you to build one, card by card, as the stock feeds you. The "busy" in the name is the stock, not the board — nearly every card you play arrives through the waste, one at a time, and never comes round again.
Treat the twelve columns as a workbench, not a puzzle. There is nothing to unpick at the deal — no hidden cards, no tangled sequences. The board is storage, and your job is to store cards where the stock can later reach them. Every decision is about where a card will be useful, not about freeing something.
Park cards where their own suit can find them. Building is suit-only, so a card has exactly one legal host in the tableau. Before you drop a waste card onto a column, ask whether that column's suit still has cards to come. A 9 of clubs under a stack of unrelated cards is a 9 you have retired.
Never stack a column so deep that its low cards are buried. Deep columns look productive and are not: the card at the bottom is the one your foundation will want first. Spread the load across the twelve columns rather than growing three of them.
Keep at least one column short. A short or empty column is your landing space for the waste card that has nowhere else to go. With ninety-two cards passing exactly once, a card you cannot place is a card you never see again — and the space you kept free is what stops that happening.
Most Forty Thieves variants argue about the tableau: how deep it is, how much of it is hidden, whether runs may travel. Busy Aces argues about the stock instead. By shrinking the deal to twelve single cards it moves almost the whole game into the waste, which makes it the family's fastest and most rhythmic member — you are never staring at a knot, only deciding where the next card goes. It sits at the opposite corner from Emperor, which hides thirty tableau cards and gives you a board to excavate. Forty and Eight sits between them, with a real board and a redeal to soften it.
